The assassination of Mahatma Gandhi on 30 January 1948 is often reduced to the act of one man firing three bullets, but this book argues that the event can only be understood through its wider historical context. It examines the final phase of the freedom struggle, the demand for Pakistan, communal violence, the trauma of Partition, the refugee crisis, perceptions of Muslim appeasement, Gandhi’s insistence on transferring fifty-five crore rupees to Pakistan, rising resentment among sections of Hindus, and power struggles within the Congress leadership. The book also raises questions that are usually avoided, including why Gandhi, despite his stated opposition to Partition, did not launch a fast unto death or a mass movement against it.
